    Rock 101

Have Blink-182 forgotten how to rock?  It’s a valid question given the first album/record to come from the pop-punk/punk-rock trio in 8 years.

I’m a long-time Blink-182 fan.  And I will go on record and say that the new material isn’t for me.  The album is a disjointed blend of +44 with HUGE overtones of Angels and Airwaves.  Something that I dislike immensely.  To me it’s pretty obvious that this album was recorded and developed in three separate locations and the band were not together for the whole of recording process.

A lot of chat online has been made of Blink-182’s members “growing up” and that “they can’t do dick jokes forever”, well if that is the case then why are they still doing them in their live shows?  Answer me that?  I know some people will point to a mature sound, but wasn’t that the case with the self titled album that came out 8 years ago?  The messages of loss and love were evident then, but they were backed by a rock soundtrack.  One that is sorely missing from the new album.   Where is the energy of “Stockholm Syndrome” or the pure magnificence of “Asthenia” (my fav Blink-182 song if you hadn’t already guessed.  There is a slight glimpse of Blink of old with the tracks “Hearts all gone” and “Kaleidoscope” as well as a Cure inspired and Linkin Park-esque “Snake Charmer”.

I will also take this opportunity to state that I do not like this new way that Tom Delonge is singing.  I don’t know if he’s doing this to protect his vocal chords but pronouncing words like “I” as “Oi” and extending smaller words such as “here” as “hay-urr” is frankly annoying.  I think he also needs to go to take some laxative so that he can shit out those Twilight novels he seems to have ingested.  The melancholy is getting old.  Save that and your new singing voice for Angels and Airwaves.

A lot of Blink-182 fans are up in arms with other fans who are not impressed with this album (I’m sure that this blog will gain its detractors).  Words such as “haters” have been thrown around online but I’m not a hater I just want the band that used to sing about my life to continue to so with killer riffs and less melancholy.   The way I see it is that this is the first new material from Blink-182 in 8 years and the majority will gobble this up but given time I believe that they will look back at this album as a filler and not a masterpiece in the Blink-182 back catalogue.  Album sales when compared to 8 years ago should back me up on this.

    And the Oscar goes to…

The following is my predictions for the forthcoming 2011 Oscars.

    BEST PICTURE

    The Social Network

    BEST DIRECTOR

David Fincher - The Social Network

    BEST ACTOR

Colin Firth - The King’s Speech

    BEST ACTRESS

    Natalie Portman - Black Swan

    BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR

Geoffrey Rush - The King’s Speech

    BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS

    Melissa Leo - The Fighter

    BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM

    Biutiful - Mexico

    BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY

    Christopher Nolan - Inception

    BEST ANIMATION

    Toy Story 3

    BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY

Danny Boyle and Simon Beaufoy - 127 Hours

    BEST ART DIRECTION

    Inception

    BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY

    Inception

    BEST SOUND MIXING

    Inception

    BEST ORIGINAL SCORE

The Social Network - Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross

Now obviously I’m basing some of my choices on films I have seen, reviews and more likely how the Academy has chosen in the past.  The BAFTAs will go in a slightly different way due to THE KINGS SPEECH.

Personally, I’m still pissed that Chris Nolan hasn’t had a nod for Best Director.  I’m also disappointed that THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO wasn’t nominated for best foreign film as it has been at the BAFTA’s which I think it will win.

Anyway.. something to mull over and discuss with me on Twitter if you want to.

    time to go

I’m at a point in my life where I hate my job and have lost all passion for it.  I’ve devoted 18 years of my life to it and have progressed extremely slowly.  Basically because I’m not a company man.  Or a “yes” man.  I work for a very large corporate company and every year they introduce a new initiative and we are all supposed to buy into it and say “yes”.  It pisses me off.  The people that come up with these new initiatives are the same assholes that came up with the previous ones.  They are a bunch of corporate “yes men” that have no idea what it is to be on the “shop floor”.  These initiatives are never given a reality check and if in the instance that they are you are not supposed to bad mouth them.  If you do, for example, and you come up with some constructive criticism then they say “oh, that’s great” and you walk away feeling that you may have made a difference.  Actually they say that they can’t change the idea because all the work has been done BUT they will use your idea next time round.  They don’t.

    Off road

What is it with people buying black 4x4’s? And do these people think that when they drive these beasts that they own the road and can drive like assholes?

    Merry Christmas?

I think that the company that I work for is doing it’s level best to try to get people to leave the company. First of all they tell us that there is no payrises this year. The follow that one up by informing us that there will be only “business critical promotions” i.e. NONE. But the cherry on the cake arrived today. We received an email stating the the site committee, in their infinite wisdom had decided that we were going to have a site Christmas party this year to promote a sense of community. OH PLEASE! One of the only reasons I tolerate that job is the £50 we get to spend on our chrimbo party.
